Assessment of muscle mass (DXA; BIA), strength (handgrip strength) and function (SPPB, gait speed, get-up-and-go test) are advised to diagnose sarcopenia.

The EWGSOP have developed an algorithm to screen for sarcopenia patients based on gait speed  (see figure).  A cut off point of <0.8 m/s usual gait speed identifies patients at risk for sarcopenia.
