REFRAMING CLINICAL NUTRITION AS A ‘GAME CHANGER’ TO OPTIMISE PATIENT OUTCOMES

Dr. Cereda will highlight the priority challenges faced by both healthcare organizations and HCPs in clinical practice today and tomorrow. Cancer is one of the highest priority healthcare burdens with high prevalence of malnutrition and muscle loss impacting oncology outcomes, as well as recovery. These can lead to incomplete recovery, especially in polymorbid ageing population, thereby accelerating functional decline, and driving recurrent falls risk in later years, leading to fracture, hospitalization, dependency, poor QoL and ultimately a state of frailty.

Reflecting on how muscle loss during healthcare setbacks can impact recovery and aging trajectories, Dr. Cereda will pose the concept of clinical nutrition as a ‘game changer’ in cancer and frailty care, especially when administered assertively, and with the right evidence-based approach.

ASSERTIVE AND PATIENT CENTRIC NUTRITIONAL INTERVENTION IN CANCER CARE

Preserving muscle mass from the onset of the cancer journey is crucial for optimizing patient outcomes. Professor Prado will underscore the importance of early identification and management of nutritional challenges and inadequate intake through proactive nutritional interventions. Her latest research emphasizes the significance of meeting elevated protein needs during cancer treatment, demonstrating that high-protein interventions play a key role in maintaining muscle mass. Additionally, she will discuss the evolving needs of oncology patients, including novel data on taste alterations, inflammation, and inadequate oral intake, which are common in this population. Professor Prado will highlight the importance of patient-centric care in enhancing the success of high-protein nutritional strategies.

TARGETED PROTEIN PROVISION AND MUSCLE REGENERATION IN THE OLDER PATIENT

Prof. Phillips will highlight the important role of muscle in ageing & disease. Sarcopenia is one of the major contributors to functional decline and falls risk in older patients. Thereby emphasizing why assertive use of muscle-targeted solutions, including high quality proteins, leucine and vitamin D are warrant as part of early multimodal interventions in older adult patient recovery programs.

Targeted high protein medical nutrition for sufficient duration throughout prehab, rehab and recovery is essential to overcome anabolic resistance of ageing & disease, protecting mobility & independence for longer.
