International PKU Day 2026 - The Diet Gets the Spotlight. But What About the Mind?

Every year on June 28th, the world comes together to mark the International PKU Day, a moment to amplify the voices of those living with Phenylketonuria, a rare inherited metabolic condition where the body cannot break down phenylalanine, an amino acid found in nearly all natural proteins. The management is lifelong and very restricted: no meat, no fish, no dairy, no exceptions. Every meal calculated. Every label read. Every day.

But this year, we're going deeper.

I can only say to everyone who struggles with a self-destructive inner demon every day: just start, keep going, stick to it, get help, and talk about it! It's worth it in every way!

- Stephanie - Living with PKU

For 2026, the theme is Traces of PKU, because PKU doesn't only leave its mark on a plate. It leaves traces on the mind: on confidence, on relationships, on how a person sees themselves and their place in the world. Mental health in PKU has been too long overlooked, and it's time to change that.

It is stories such as Stephanie’s that make this theme so important. For years, she lived in a silent spiral, battling exhaustion, brain fog, and depression before finding her way back. Her journey is one of courage, honesty, and hard-won resilience, and a powerful reminder of the lasting, often unseen impact of PKU.
