Nutricia’s Oncology Educational Event in Barcelona

On September 14th, 2024, we hosted an educational event in Barcelona, Spain, titled ‘Establishing Nutritional Care as an Integral Part of the Cancer Journey: A Non-Negotiable to Optimise Patient Outcomes.’

This event featured an international panel of experts who discussed the critical importance of early detection and treatment of malnutrition in patients with cancer. They shared valuable insights into how nutritional support could significantly enhance oncological treatment and patient outcomes, along with practical strategies for integrating nutritional care into everyday clinical practice.

Why nutritional care should be prioritized in cancer care

Dr. Florian Scotté discussed the evolving landscape of cancer treatment, emphasizing the growing integration of personalized care and the crucial role of nutritional support, as a key component of supportive care, in improving patient outcomes. He highlighted the high prevalence of malnutrition in patients with cancer and reviewed evidence showing its negative impact on treatment tolerance, toxicity, survival, and quality of life.

Taking concrete actions to implement nutritional care in the oncology setting

Dr. Maurizio Muscaritoli discussed the significant impact of cancer on nutritional status and body composition, emphasizing how cancer-related malnutrition adversely affects treatment toxicity and survival. He highlighted lack of awareness among healthcare providers regarding the negative effects of malnutrition, which represents an unmet need in clinical practice.

Dr. Muscaritoli introduced the novel PRONTO protocol, quick and easy tool designed for oncologists to identify patients at risk of malnutrition for further evaluation and follow-up.

Finally, he shared clinical evidence demonstrating that early, assertive nutritional interventions can improve treatment tolerance and survival outcomes in patients with cancer.

ESMO recommends nutritional care as integral part of oncology practice

People with cancer are at high risk of becoming malnourished, with around 1 in 3 patients affected1. Malnutrition has a negative impact on clinical outcomes and mortality in patients with cancer. It is associated with shorter survival, poor quality of life and performance status, impaired immune function, increased treatment-related toxicities, as well as increased post-surgical complications and longer hospital stays and costs of stay2-4. As part of new guidelines, ESMO endorses implementation of nutritional management as integral part of cancer care and provides recommendations for identification, prevention and treatment of reversible elements of malnutrition in adult cancer patients.

Nutritional care is important at every step of the patient journey

Cancer treatment is often a complex and difficult journey, and ensuring patients are fit to receive treatment is crucial to improve patient outcomes and prognosis. Cancer treatments act a trigger of catabolism, leading to weight and muscle loss, that adversely impact clinical outcomes1-4.  Early detection and treatment of malnutrition is essential to optimize cancer care3,4.
