The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Congress, being held on October 20-24th 2023, is one of the most significant annual events in the field of oncology in Europe. It consistently draws an impressive gathering of oncologists each year, and represents a premier platform for unveiling cutting-edge research, therapeutic innovations, and technological breakthroughs in the field of oncology.

During that time in Madrid, Nutricia's Oncology educational event will take place on Sunday October 22nd, 2023, starting at 18:00 CEST. After welcome drinks, an exciting scientific program will be presented by leading oncology experts and followed by a live Q&A session. Join this event to learn more about how to implement nutritional guidelines in practice and within multidisciplinary teams,  how long term nutrition strategies can improve patient outcomes, and to gain novel insights on the latest research on nutritional care in immunotherapy treated patients.

Dr. Vilma Pacheco Barcia (Symposium Chair)

Dr. Vilma Pacheco Barcia (Symposium Chair),
MD, PhD, Department of Medical Oncology, Hospital Universitario De Torrejón, Madrid, Spain.

Dr. Vilma Pacheco Barcia obtained her degree in Medicine from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (2013). She is a Medical Oncology consultant after completing her residency at the Hospital Universitario La Princesa (2019). She has completed two international observership programs to expand her training at McGill University Health Center and Perlmutter Cancer Center - NYU Langone Health. She received the FSEOM-Merck "Somos Futuro" Award for career path during residency (2020). Vilma Pacheco holds a PhD in Medicine from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid for the project entitled "Systemic Inflammatory Response Index: Prognostic Factor in pancreatic cancer" (2021) and Master’s degree in Molecular Oncology by CEB (2021). Professor of the chapter on Nutrition in the Oncology Patient of the Master's Degree in Nutrition, Obesity and Microbiota of UDIMA (2023-2024). Her research is focused since 2016 on the study of the prognostic relevance of systemic inflammation in pancreatic cancer patients and the nutritional aspects of these patients. She is the Coordinator of the PANTHEIA-SEOM multicenter study of prognostic and predictive factors of response in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer and their nutritional evolution throughout the disease.

Alessandro Laviano, MD, is associate professor of Internal Medicine at the Department of Translational and Precision Medicine, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Dr. Laviano is Chief, Clinical Nutrition Unit at Sant’Andrea University Hospital in Rome, Italy.

During the last decade, Dr. Laviano has served in different roles within the central committees of the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN), and he is currently the Director of the ESPEN LLL programme, as well as Coordinator of the Supervisory Board of the NutritionDay project, and coordinator of the ESPEN Cancer Task Force. Dr. Laviano is currently: Editor in Chief of Nutrition; Associate Editor of Clinical Nutrition; Associate Editor of Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle.

Prof. József Lövey

Prof. József Lövey,
MD, PhD, Deputy head of the Centre of Radiotherapy National Institute of Oncology and medical director of the National Institute of Oncology in Budapest, Hungary.

József Lövey is a consultant radiation oncologist, deputy head of the Centre of Radiotherapy National Institute of Oncology and since 2013, he is the medical director of the National Institute of Oncology in Budapest, Hungary. In addition to his clinical activity, József Lövey completed a PhD in 2006 at Semmelweis University, Budapest, where he currently holds a position as an Associate Professor. He is a member of the Executive Board and the Accreditation Board of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes and a member of the scientific advisory board of the TRANSCAN ERA-NET consortium. He is principal investigator and co-investigator on several international multicentre trials, and his main scientific research interests include radiation sensitivity/ sensitization, neuro-oncology as well investigating the impact of nutritional care on oncological outcomes.

Prof. François Goldwasser

François Goldwasser is the head of the department of medical oncology of Cochin Hospital, and is a member of the U1016 INSERM laboratory, working on energetic metabolism and cancer, at Cochin Institute, Paris Cité University, France. He did a PhD in molecular pharmacology of anticancer agents and was guest researcher for 2 years at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD, USA in 1993-1995. He is professor in medical oncology since 2001. His research is focused since 2015 on the relationship between host characteristics-especially nutritional status- and the anticancer activity of immune checkpoint inhibitors. He created to patients cohorts and multidisciplinary groups dedicated to immunotherapy (the CERTIM cohort) and to rest energy studies (the METHEHO cohort). He published more than 320 original papers to date.
